Lights up on vegetables in the crisper. They are having their weekly celebration for the
new vegetables that were purchased and for those that will be cooked this week. The
sound of rhythmic drumming can be heard as the vegetables dance and form the ritual
circle. Spinach steps to the forefront.
Spinach
Roots and herbs, greens and fungi we had a wonderful week last week! I know that some
of you were concerned about the baby carrots but I just found out that they were put in
the kids lunch as a snack, (the veggies sigh with relief).
Sister Corn
Oh, good! I was so worried about those baby carrots! I’m glad they found a good home.
Spinach
Yes they did, Yes they did.
We also need to have a moment of silence for Avocado. The family bought her yesterday
but she was not yet ripe. She is currently ripening on top of the refrigerator in a brown
paper bag.
Sister Sweet Potato
May Avocado get ripe in the bag and be highly flavored!
Spinach
And may her vitamin C ripen to 34%!
Also this week our brother Collard Greens has joined us! I hear he will be cooked with
some smoked turkey on Sunday…Welcome brother! (the veggies applaud and welcome)
Now I would like to open the floor for announcements…
Brother Garlic
(rising)
Yes, I would like to say that Sister Onion and myself will also be in the pot with Collard
Greens on Sunday. We are very excited.
Spinach
Well will somebody say vitamin A! Thank you for sharing that Brother Garlic. What a
wonderful way to kick off the week! Let’s all hold hands…Brothers and Sisters in
nutrients go forth this week and share your goodness with the family that purchased us.
May we stay fresh as we wait to be cooked and keep our color in the pot.
They all shout out different vitamins and nutrients in praise.
Spinach
Everybody have a healthy week!
All the veggies exit singing and dancing with joy, except Broccoli who has been low key
throughout the entire celebration. Spinach notices and crosses to Broccoli.
4
Spinach
Hey there Baby B…why the long face?
Broccoli
Brother Spinach if I told you, you wouldn’t understand.
Spinach
(laughing)
I may have a few wrinkles in my leaves, but I still remember some things about being a
fresh vegetable. Tell me what’s wrong.
Broccoli begins to sing Broccoli’s Lament. The lament ends and Spinach tries some
tough love on Broccoli.
Spinach
Now I know you think it’s all carbonation and fun up there in the top of the refrigerator,
but heed my words, there are some things up there you don’t want to see.
Broccoli
See I knew you wouldn’t understand! It’s about me just being green and boring.
Spinach launches into his Intervention song.
Spinach
Now you hear what I’m telling you…appreciate what you are!
Spinach pats Broccoli on the back then exits. Broccoli sits alone.
Broccoli
Nobody is listening to me. I’m getting out of this crisper and I’m going off to see the
fridge!
Broccoli’s theme begins to play as he/she escapes from the crisper. As Broccoli enters
the rest of the refrigerator he/she is meet with all kinds of artificial preservatives and
sweeteners. They dance (MSG, DSG, Sucrose and Dextrose). This is stylized and
should feel like the dealers on the mean streets. Broccoli tries and retreats from them.
As he/she is backing up, Salt Pork and the Manifestations slink onto the stage and
observe. They decide to approach Broccoli.
Salty
Hey little bit, what’s a green veggie like yourself doing out here in the top of the fridge?
Broccoli
(still uneasy)
Well, see…I just wanted to know what goes on out here. I mean…
5
Salty
(amused)
Calm down little bit, we ain’t gonna bite cha. I tell you what, you can even hang with us.
See, the family’s Great Aunt Ida is coming to town soon and she loves her some Pork.
She’ll be cooking us up soon. You can get cooked with us.
Broccoli
I don’t know…
Salty
Come on kid…
Salty Pork and crew launch into their number. Broccoli gets caught up in the
excitement of their performance and by the end he/she is singing with them. One of
the Manifestations leaves the stage and comes back with a matching jacket for
Broccoli.
Salty
Awww Cheese! You sho do look good little bit! Come on and we’ll show you all there
is to see about the re-fridge-e-rator!
Broccoli
Ok!!!!!
As Broccoli’s theme begins to play they set off on a journey through the refrigerator.
They run into Granny Smith and the Pink Ladies sitting on a top self quilting. The
Ladies instantly scowl when they see Broccoli with Salty.
Salty
(cool as you please)
Afternoon Ladies. Lovely weather we’re having…
Granny
Don’t you go “lovely weathering” me Salty. Your slick greasy ways don’t work on this
old apple! And Baby B! What are you doing running around this ice box with them!? I
bet you Brother Spinach does not know you out here.
Broccoli
Well, see…what had happened was…
Granny
…and don’t you fix your face to lie to me! Were you about to lie to me?
Broccoli
No ma’am! I…was…see Salty is showing me around. We’re friends.
6
Granny
(loud laugh)
Ha! Baby, Salty Pork ain’t got no friends!
Granny and the pink ladies start singing Granny’s Blues. The apples menace the pork
while they sing.
Granny
You hear me?
Broccoli
Yes ma’am.
Granny
Well then get your little green self back to the crisper and stay away from trouble!
The apples turn on their heels and exit. The Pork starts laughing.
Salty
Man, I hate those apples. They’re always trying to spoil the fun.
Broccoli
(feeling uneasy again)
Maybe Granny is right…maybe I should try and get back to the crisper. Brother Spinach
will worry.
Salty
Please, don’t listen to that old apple! Come on, you still got a lot to see.
Salty grabs Broccoli by the hand and they run off to the sound of Broccolis’ theme. As
they run, they bump into Corn Syrup.
C.S.
Salty my man! What’s happenin’?
Salty
C.S.! Man what you doing in the fridge?
C.S.
Oh, man you know Aunt Ida is coming and she wanted them to chill me for something
she’s baking, so I’m just hanging out! Who is this…
Salty
Oh, this here is Broccoli! Broccoli, this is Corn Syrup, we call him C.S. for short.
Broccoli
Hey…
7
C.S.
Well this is a treat! Never meet a green veggie before. They always down in the crisper
like they can’t be bothered with the rest of us.
Like we ain’t got nothing to offer…
C.S. begins to sing. As they sing Broccoli looks faint and starts to loose some of
his/her color.
Salty
Hey little bit, are you alright. You’re not looking so green.
Broccoli
(trying to be brave)
I’m ok....I
As C.S.is finishing up his song, White bread and Wheat Bread enter from opposite sides
of the stage with their respective rice behind them. The singing stops abruptly.
Salty
Oh this is not going to be good…
Broccoli
Why?
C.S.
(laughing)
They are rival starches! They do not like each other.
White and Wheat meet face to face center stage. The grains stand behind their
respective cousin bread.
White Bread
(attitude)
Wheat…
Wheat Bread
(more attidute)
White…
White Bread
So Wheat…ummm, what are you and your little starchy grain doing on my shelf?
8
Wheat
We are left over from a very delicious and healthy Moroccan dinner last night. But you
wouldn’t know nothin’ about healthy…I mean you did come off the top of them two day
old left over ribs! You still got some mild sauce on your crust bruh!
Salty
(instigating)
Oh snap peas! That was cold!
Wheat
And I can smell the pork coming off your little ricey homie over there. What are you
dude, like 685 calories per cup?
Everybody gasp.
C.S.
(interjecting)
Now that was hitting below the grain!
White Bread
That’s it Wheat! Y’all are going down!
A crunk, hip-hop, footwork, stepping dance fight ensues. As they dance Broccoli keeps
getting sicker and less green as time passes. At the end of the dance Broccoli faints.
As he/she is falling the lights flicker and everyone leaves the stage. Lights go to black.
As Broccoli wakes up he/she is greeted by The Real Sugars.
Raw Honey
Sweetie, are you ok?
Cane Sugar
Honey, this little piece of broccoli is almost brown!
Raw Honey
(reaching down to Broccoli)
Talk to me sweetie! Tell Honey what happened?
Broccoli
(still confused)
It was terrible…I met Salty and then they gave me this jacket and I was with them and
then we met up with C.S. and I started feeling sick. I just wanted to see life out side of
the crisper. Then Wheat and White had this big dance fight and…
Cane Sugar
Salty Pork, Corn Syrup and White Bread all in the same day? No wonder you got sick!
Their nutrient count is so low down!
9
The Real Sugars let Broccoli know what’s going on with their song. After that the lean
meats step out and drop “Go head meat get down”. During this movement, Broccoli
starts to get back some green color.
Chicken
See, there are good things in the fridge too. Salty is a punk!
Fish
Running with him, you will turn brown and stay brown! He sucks the nutrients out of
everything he comes close to.
Broccoli
I thought it would be fun. But it wasn’t fun.
Raw Honey
Sometimes the only fun you need is the truth! (she pulls out her cell phone). I need to
call my cousin down here to show you how much fun you can have if you know what
you’re getting….(she makes a call, whispers a few words and hangs up. Before she
can finish hanging up Dark Chocolate enters.)
Chocolate
Girl, I came right over! Is this the poor confused baby?
Raw Honey
Meet my cousin Dark Chocolate. Yes this is the baby. He/She needs some of your truth.
Chocolate
And you know I can tell it!
Broccoli
But you’re chocolate? You’re not good for people,
Chocolate
Dear, I am perfect for people. When people don’t add white sugar and them to me I am
that good, good food. Let me tell you my True Food Story.
(While Chocolate tells her story; there is music and Honey and Cane Sugar do a
contemporary dance interpreting what she’s saying, there is also a Beet dancing during
this story)
I was born in the Amazon in 200 B.C. My mother is the Cocoa Tree. She’s quite
beautiful. One day when I was very young a young Mayan man pulled me from my
mothers’ branches and took me back to his village. He was in the forest looking for an
herb to heal his ailing father. He had tried everything to find an herb or fruit to heal his
father when he stumbled upon our tree. When we reached the village the young man
cooked me down in water until I was a thick liquid. Then he gave me to his father to
10
drink. The young man’s father started to feel better that evening, so the young man gave
me to his father when the sun rose 6 times. By the 7th sunrise the father was fully
recovered! The young man was so pleased that he threw a celebration in my honor! And
for 2000 years I was used for medicine and in religious rituals. Even today you can find
my image carved on the walls in caves in South America.
And it was 3500 years before anybody thought to sweeten me! And at first I was
sweetened with natural sugars like my cousin Raw Honey here. The idea to sweeten me
with white sugar didn’t come up until Europeans discovered the sugar fields in the
Caribbean and the Americas. So when you take away all the bad sugar, you can get to
my true goodness.
Broccoli
I had no idea that you were so healthy Ms. Chocolate. But there is something that I don’t
understand.
Chocolate
What’s that baby?
Broccoli
What is the Beet doing in your story?
Chocolate
(laughing)
Oh child me and Beet go way back! Most people don’t know this, but you can use the
juice from beet’s as sugar too. That’s what folks did sometime before they knew about
Corn Syrup. Some folks still use beet sugar to sweeten me till this day.
Broccoli
Wow! That’s cool!
Raw Honey
Oh and sweetie, there are so many True Food Stories that need to be told…check out my
Snacks!
The lights strobe and house music begins to play. Honey, Beet and Cane Sugar, one of
the Apples and Collard Greens begin to do a runway show with large flash cards with
different snacks pictured.
Dark Chocolate M.C.’s the show. 5 Healthy Snacks TBA. After the runway show is
over, they all surround Broccoli.
Raw Honey
And now we’re going to get you back to the crisper where you belong.
11
They begin to perform a ritual dance of healing around Broccoli to Broccolis Theme.
Lights go to black. Broccoli wakes up surrounded by The Pork’s. Broccoli is
disorientated.
Salty
You ok?
Broccoli
(rising and taking off the Pork jacket)
I am now. I think it’s time for me to go back to the crisper. Where things are healthy!
Broccoli runs of stage and lights fade to black. Broccoli sneaks back into the crisper
but Spinach is waiting for him/her
Spinach
(slightly amused)
So, did you find what you were looking for?
Broccoli
Brother Spinach, I’m so glad to be home! It was…terrible!
Spinach
Now, it’s not all bad up in the top of the fridge, you just have to be careful about what
foods you pal around with.
Broccoli
I’m really glad to be home!
.
All the crisper veggies come out to the closing music. They sing a welcoming song
under this dialogue.
Spinach
Well, I’m just glad you made it back with all your nutrients!
Broccoli
I am too…I never thought being green would feel so good! Thanks for everything
Brother Spinach.
